Catholicism Prayer?

I read today that in the Catholic belief system it is commonly accepted to pray to cannonized saints. When I read the bible I find that prayer is a form of worship and that worship should only be given to God. Can someone please shed some light on this topic. I am not looking to argue but to simply understand.
