In regard to Buddhism from what i understand?

regarding buddhism i understand they they espouse non violence and have a sort of spiritual connection with all things and in life's balances. does this mean you cannot protect yourself in any sort of confrontation or if part of a country that you cannot conduct war. wouldn't the rest of the world who do dot have these ideals just rung roughshod all over you as in tibet. and the Dalia llama that is in india doesn't seem to me to be much of a leader or possess any Great intellect. seems all he really does is smile alot.
