How easy will it be to get to the beaches and mountains of Thailand from Bangkok?

I am thinking about living in Bangkok Thailand for 3 months. I know that there are beautiful beaches to the east and south, and mountains to the north and west. I don't mind living in a big city as long as I can escape the skyscrs and depressing financial districts every once in awhile.
